Medical City Children’s Hospital And World’s Leading Doctors Come Together For The 5th Biennial Congress Of The International Cleft Lip And Palate Foundation

Sharing the latest treatments and techniques for craniofacial patient care, more than 50 leading craniofacial and cleft facial experts from 55 countries visited Medical City Children’s Hospital in September for the 5th Biennial Congress of the International Cleft Lip and Palate Foundation.  Sponsored by the World Craniofacial Foundation, the biennial event provides physicians with a platform for enhancing skills and techniques, in addition to learning the latest treatments for craniofacial patient care.  Among the world-renowned faculty was Medical City Children’s Hospital physician and World Craniofacial Foundation chairman, Dr. Kenneth E. Salyer, who moderated the opening panel discussion and presented during multiple breakout sessions.  Other local participants from Medical City Hospital included Drs. David Genecov, Raul Barcelo, Tim Trone and Elizabeth Sperry who presented a breakout session on airway obstruction.

During the five-day conference, surgeons, orthodontists, genetists, speech pathologists and other experts received cutting edge continuing education in craniofacial and cleft surgery through presentations, live panel discussions, hands-on workshops, and dialogue on the importance of developing international inter-disciplinary teams.

“Each year, more than ten thousand children in the U.S., and more than half a million internationally are born with serious facial challenges, which limit their abilities and can even be fatal.  However with proper treatment most children can be rehabilitated to normal productive civilians,” says Dr. Kenneth E. Salyer.  “Management of craniofacial patients requires an inter-disciplinary approach that combines many medical disciplines.  Because of the successful track record at Medical City Children’s Hospital’s Craniofacial Center, we believe this is the perfect setting for bringing physicians together from all over the world with the goal of sharing the latest ideas, techniques and research.”

Founded in 1986, the Craniofacial Center at Medical City Children’s Hospital is one of the world’s leading medical centers for treating children with craniofacial birth defects and facial trauma, and one of the busiest treatment centers in the U.S.  The hospital’s craniofacial team has performed more than 22,000 surgical procedures related to these problems and treated patients from more than 75 countries, in addition to every state in the U.S.

The World Craniofacial Foundation is a global advocate for excellent craniofacial patient care, education and research, as well as the primary resource of philanthropic support for the treatment of birth-related and acquired deformities of the head and face, including trauma, degenerative diseases and tumors, regardless of geography and socioeconomic class.

“Participating in this conference reaffirms our commitment and dedication to deliver the most comprehensive care and treatment to not only our patients but to all children around the world,” said Dr. Kenneth E. Salyer.  “The Biennial Congress of the International Cleft Lip and Palate Foundation allows doctors to learn the most innovative and effective developments in patient care, and serves as a useful networking platform to exchange ideas and best practices.”
