Mike and Mike in the Morning Radio Show Broadcasts Live on Campus
V Foundation Auction Lands Hospital in National Spotlight

Many sports fans are familiar with Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg, hosts of the very popular radio program Mike and Mike in the Morning. The four-hour broadcast airs every weekday morning nationwide on ESPN2 and locally on 103.3FM Radio. It is heard by over 13 million listeners.

In the summer of 2008, Golic and Greenberg announced that they would broadcast their morning show live from the home of the listener who placed the highest bid for the “Don’t Ever Give Up ESPYs V Foundation Auction.” The V Foundation was founded in 1993 by Jimmy Valvano, legendary basketball coach at North Carolina State University and award-winning broadcaster for ESPN, who lost his battle with cancer later that same year. Before his death, Valvano gave a gallant speech at the 1993 ESPY Awards, speaking four words that would become the foundation’s motto: “Don’t Ever Give Up.”

During the 2008 auction, Marta Miranda of Jupiter, Florida bid $57,100 for the opportunity to host Mike and Mike and was named the winner. Moments later, the usually talkative radio hosts fell silent when they received an unexpected call from Medical City’s Scott Schmidly, chief operating officer, and Tim Burroughs, then chief financial officer. “Scott and I are totally inspired by what you guys are doing with cancer research and The V Foundation,” Burroughs said. “We’d like to match the winning bid to have the Mike and Mike Show come to our patients’ home here at Medical City Children’s Hospital.” The stunned hosts agreed and the long-distance planning began.

On December 2, 2008, the Medical City Atrium was transformed into an ESPN set literally overnight as Mike and Mike brought their show from Bristol, Connecticut to Dallas, Texas. Marta Miranda was also able to make the trip from Jupiter, Florida to celebrate her generous donation and share her passion for the cause live on the air.

Inspired by the generosity of Scott Schmidly and Tim Burroughs, who matched the winning bid with personal donations, other local businesses, organizations, and personal donors also pledged their support, raising the total donation to an astounding $100,000.

The good times kept rolling throughout the day as both The Michael Irvin Show and Galloway and Company broadcasted their local radio shows live from the Medical City campus as well, making for a full day of ESPN events and recognition of The V Foundation’s efforts.

The pediatric patients, their parents, the Medical City staff, and visitors were well entertained as the hosts and celebrities patiently took pictures, shook hands, and signed autographs. Through amazing events such as this, The V Foundation continues to fulfill its powerful mission to research a cure for cancer. To date, over $70 million has been raised and there’s no sign of anyone giving up.
